The Art of Woodblock Printing

by Erin O'Keefe

Printmaking is the art of image reproduction. It is a broad practice and encompasses lithography, intaglio, and relief printing. In all cases, a plate is prepared using various techniques so that it can be repeatedly inked and printed, producing the same image every time. My work at the University of Virginia has focused primarily on woodblock relief printing, during which a block of wood is carved out and printed like a large stamp.

My primary motifs come from my experiences in nature, as I am an avid hiker and bird enthusiast. Next year I will be pursuing a Distinguished Major Project in printmaking which will focus on human consciousness and the environment.

The Steps to Woodblock Printing

  1. Carve
  2. Using specialized knives, I carve out the highlights of the image. Unlike using a pen to draw black lines, the carving tools create white lines. Shadows are created where the wood is uncarved.

  3. Ink
  4. When inking, I use a large roller to distribute the ink evenly on the block. It is wise to avoid over inking the block, because this ruins the intricacies and details of the carving.

  5. Print
  6. When prinitng, vital to set the printing press prior to inking. The pressure shoud never be too heavy (this will splinter the wood block) or to light (this will not transfer the ink to the paper). When printing a woodblock print, I use thin asian papers like mulberry, kitakata, or kozo. Because asian paper is less absorbant than thicker eurpean paper, the image will sit nicely on top rather than soaking into the fiber. This creates a crisp, detailed print.
